How to Do Acroyoga

New to acroyoga? Start here. This short video walks you through the basics before you try anything with a partner.

What You'll Learn

Acroyoga is built on three things: clear communication, a strong base, and trust between partners. Before you try any pose, the base and flyer talk through the move, agree on hand and foot placement, and set up a spotter if it's a new one. Bases work from strong points, like flat feet or straight arms, never the joints. Flyers stay engaged and controlled, not dead weight. Start slow, warm up your wrists and shoulders, and always have a way to bail out of a pose safely. Once that foundation is solid, everything else in acroyoga builds from there.

Start With the Foundations

Bird, Throne, and Whale are the three poses everything else builds on.

Bird acroyoga pose

Bird

Flyer balances face-down on the base's feet, arms out.

Chair (Throne) acroyoga pose

Chair (Throne)

Flyer sits upright on the base's feet, like a throne.

Whale acroyoga pose

Whale

Flyer reclines face-up across the base's shins, a resting pose.
