Base vs Flyer: Which Role Is Yours?
Every acroyoga pose has a base and a flyer. Here is what each one does.
The base
The base is on the bottom, usually lying on their back. Their job is to create a stable platform by stacking their bones, so the ground carries the weight instead of their muscles. A good base works from strong points like the feet on the hips and the hands, not from bent joints.
The flyer
The flyer is in the air. Their job is to stay engaged: a straight, active body is light and easy to hold, while a loose body is heavy and hard to balance.
Which one should you try?
Usually the bigger or more grounded partner starts as the base, but size matters less than you think. Alignment does most of the work, so try both roles. You will understand your partner much better once you have done their job.

FAQ
Does the base have to be stronger?
No. A base with good alignment can hold a heavier flyer, because their bones carry the weight, not their muscles.
Can a woman base a man?
Yes. Alignment matters more than size or gender, so anyone can base when the bones are stacked correctly.
